The Queen’s 10 runners at Royal Ascot with Frankie Dettori best chance of win

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Not long after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, the Queen will hope to cue another procession with some fortune at Royal Ascot this week.

The Head of State shelved plans to appear at this year's Epsom Derby so soon after commemorating her 70 years of service. Those odds might improve at Ascot, however, both on the track and in regards to her chances of attending.

The Queen's horses have gone a long time without much consistent success at Ascot but will surely hope to see that change in 2022. SBK has provided their own tips and predictions for how this week's races will proceed, with one royal contender a distinct favourite to cross the line first.

Her chances appear promising considering the Queen will have no fewer than 10 horses in the field across four days of action. Outsider King's Lynn opens the billing as a 16/1 shot in Tuesday's opening act, hoping to stage an upset in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at 3.40pm.

The famous red, purple, gold and black silks will also be sighted just the once on Wednesday when 10/1 Perfect Alibi will be one of 12 expected runners for the Queen's Vase. Aidan O'Brien has trained three of the last seven winners of this race, but William Haggas hopes he can clinch victory on the Queen's behalf this week.

Her best chance of triumph rests with Frankie Dettori, however, as he looks to become the joint-most successful jockey in the history of the Hampton Court Stakes. Ryan Moore currently holds the record after riding four winners in the Group 1 meet, but Dettori could draw level with Reach For The Moon.

John and Thady have trained the three-year-old prospect into top contention for Thursday's penultimate fixture. Reach For The Moon comes in at 11/8 having won two of his six races to date, though he's yet to finish outside the top two in any of those.

After finishing a close second to My Prospero in the Heron Stakes at Sandown last month, Reach For The Moon returns seeking his first win of 2022. He'll do so as the highest-rated horse in the Hampton Court Stakes, and he has the small odds to match that billing.

Just Fine is in position to give the Queen another contender, with the four-year-old set to line up in Friday's Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at 3.40pm as a joint-favourite. Spring is Sprung presents one of her biggest prices of the week, meanwhile, and is a distant 20/1 shot for the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at 6.10pm on Friday.
