Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic’s had a vaccine exemption to enter Australia due to a recent Covid infection, his lawyers have said in court.
Djokovic was denied entry to Australia after landing in Melbourne earlier in the week ahead of the Australian Open, which he has won a record nine times.
The 34-year-old, who has won 20 Grand Slams overall, had been a granted a medical exemption to play in the tournament but his visa was revoked when he entered Australia.
Djokovic, who has said he is opposed to vaccination, is being held in immigration detention until his hearing on Monday morning.
The tennis star’s lawyers are currently in court appealing his deportation and say he had a medical exemption after testing positive for Covid-19 on December 16.
