Emma Raducanu is regarded as one of the biggest talents on the WTA Tour having already picked up her first Grand Slam title at the tender age of 18. But 21-time Grand Slam doubles champion Pam Shriver believes the 2022 season will see Raducanu drop down the rankings.

This time last year, Raducanu was an unknown talent among most tennis fans with only a handful of people aware of what she was capable of.

Fast forward a few months and everything changed for the teenager as she took everyone by surprise at Wimbledon.

A remarkable run to the fourth round made pundits and players stand up and take notice.

Better was to come though when Raducanu stunned the world in one of the most extraordinary sporting moments in the modern era.

At the US Open, Raducanu smashed numerous records before going on to clinch a historic Grand Slam title.

It’s been a whirlwind for the Bromley native ever since with former players and pundits predicting what could happen next.

Some have urged patience while others believe 2022 could be another barnstorming year for young Raducanu.

Shriver sides with the former, predicting Raducanu to fall outside the top 20 by the end of the year.

DON’T MISS

“I think 2022 is going to continue to be a challenge for her,” Shriver told WTA’s official website.

“I think it’s going to be 2023 when we have a clearer idea of what her consistency level is going to be.

“I might be wrong, but it was such a sudden, unnatural step from qualifying to winning a major – never been done before – followed up by all these new business partnerships, recognition and coaching changes.

“The only thing that has remained the same is her name, the sport she plays and her agent.

“I feel like everything else around her has changed, and when you’re a teenager you’re already going through a lot of changes.

“I’d be surprised if she’s still in the Top 20 at the end of the year.”

Raducanu was scheduled to take part in the Melbourne Summer Set event this week, but pulled out having just returned from isolation.
