Westwood confirms he had successful surgery on horror ankle injury

Burnley’s Ashley Westwood confirms he’s had successful surgery on horror ankle injury sustained at West Ham… with midfielder adamant he’ll ‘be kicking that ball with every single one of you’ as his side try to beat the drop

Ashley Westwood has revealed he has had successful surgery as he paid tribute to the ‘overwhelming’ support he has received since his horrific ankle injury suffered against West Ham.

Westwood, 32, was forced off on a stretcher with aa serious injury following a collision with West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic in the 22nd minute.

In what was a 50-50 challenge it was Westwood who came off much worse and Vlasic was in tears during the lengthy stoppage to treat the Burnley man.

The 32-year-old was taken off after suffering a serious injury in their 1-1 draw on Sunday

In his first statement since the horror injury, Westwood has looked to thank all those that have helped him, from paramedics and staff at Cromwell Hospital to his wife and two kids. 

Westwood wrote: ‘Firstly I’d like to thank everyone for their messages of support which flooded in after Sunday, it’s been overwhelming and I really appreciate it. 

‘I’d like to thank the paramedics and hospital staff who treated me on Sunday, all the staff and players at West Ham United as well as the physios and doctor from Burnley Football Club. 

‘The fans who were at the game on Sunday were incredible and the reaction I received from all supporters as I left the pitch was fantastic. All my team-mates, the kit man, groundsmen, chef, everyone connected with Burnley Football Club has been brilliant.

The incident happened in the 22nd minute when Westwood collided with West Ham’s Vlasic

The midfielder required lengthy treatment before being stretchered off in the 30th minute

‘Special mention to Alan Pace, the chairman, who’s been making sure my wife and kids are sorted – he even offered to babysit. 

‘Thanks also go to the surgeon and all the staff at Cromwell Hospital and of course all my friends and family who’ve reached out with messages of support.

‘Lastly I’d like to thank my wife who’s already been through so much this year and my two children who have kept me smiling. 

‘To my team-mates, I will be kicking that ball with every single on of you. I have had the honour to share the pitch with you for some years and I know the spirit, strength and determination of the group. 

‘My surgery went well and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch soon.’

Westwood’s absence from the pitch is a major blow for Burnley as they battle against relegation from the Premier League.

Everton’s 1-1 draw against Leicester on Wednesday means Burnley go into Thursday night’s game with Southampton four points adrift of safety.

They are yet to appoint a successor to axed manager Sean Dyche as they prepare for a run-in of Southampton, Wolves, Watford, Aston Villa twice, Tottenham and Newcastle.
