Newcastle United are lining up former Arsenal boss Unai Emery to replace Steve Bruce as manager, as the new ownership close in on a first appointment since taking charge at St. James' Park.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund completed a £300m takeover of the northeast club in October, ending an 18-month saga after initial approaches were made in April 2020.

Bruce remained in charge for the first fixture under the new consortium, overseeing a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in his 1000th game in management before being dismissed a few days later.

Graeme Jones has since been appointed as interim manager, but results have not improved.

The Magpies remain without a win this season.

Sitting 19th in the Premier League table and six points of safety, a swift appointment is needed to guide the Toon away from the relegation zone.

And it appears the Public Investment Fund has identified former Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the man to spearhead the Tyneside revolution.

The Telegraph allege the current Villarreal manager is a leading candidate to replace Steve Bruce due to his previous experience in England.

While the Daily Mail report Emery is expected to be announced before this weekend's fixture against Brighton with a deal set to be concluded in the next 48 hours.

It's stated Villarreal's £6m compensation fee will be no issue for the new consortium, who are said to have amassed a wealth of £320bn.

Consequently, the Saudi-led owners are willing to heavily back Emery in the winter transfer window, in an attempt to avoid the club's third relegation from the Premier League.
