Hincapie also has experience of playing at left-back, with the 20-year-old having produced some encouraging performances for Leverkusen.

Tottenham have already been heavily active in the transfer window, securing the signings of Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster.

Ben Davies has frequently been deployed as the left-sided centre-back under Conte, but Hincapie would provide competition for that position.

Conte was looking to bring in Alessandro Bastoni but was unable to complete a deal for the defender, who elected to remain at Inter Milan.

Hincapie is poised to represent Ecuador at this year’s World Cup having already made 19 appearances for his country.

Since joining Leverkusen last year Hincapie has made 33 appearances for the German club.

Hincapie made his breakthrough into first-team football at Independiente del Valle in his homeland prior to signing for Talleres in Argentina.

Having secured Champions League qualification, Conte is eager to further mould the team in his image.
