Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard could be set for a January move to Tottenham as the north Londoners weigh-up their transfer options. The England international has cut a frustrated figure this season after failing to nail down a first-team place.

Lingard enjoyed a successful second half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games.

The player’s performances for the Hammers put him firmly back on the England radar as he returned to the Three Lions squad for the first time in almost two years during his spell in east London.

Speculation about Lingard’s future was rife last summer, with a number of clubs apparently interested in signing him.

But he opted to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place in the side.

It hasn’t gone well for the 29-year-old and he could now be regretting his decision to stay put as he has started just two games in all competitions this season.

He has appeared eight times as a substitute in the Premier League and came off the bench to score a late winner against West Ham in September.

With the ace out of contract in the summer, he looks destined to walk away from the Red Devils.

And according to football.london, Tottenham have already made contract with Lingard’s representatives as they look to thrash out a deal for the player.

They could hang on until the summer to bypass a transfer fee, although the north Londoners could decide to act now to bolster their squad as they push for a top-four place during the second half of the season.

United could be keen for a deal as it would prevent them losing their player for nothing at the end of the campaign.

And Lingard will probably want to move on sooner rather than later as it would give him a better chance of playing regular football.

Lingard is known to be ambitious about playing international football after winning 32 caps for his country and will likely be targeting a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

The tournament is set to get underway in Qatar in November and England are among the favourites to lift the trophy.

If Lingard did move to Spurs this month, he would hope to command a place in the forward line alongside Son Heung-min and England team-mate Harry Kane.

But Tottenham could face a battle with West Ham and Newcastle to sign the player.

Hammers boss David Moyes is a big fan of the player, while Newcastle are desperate for reinforcements as they look to stave off relegation to the Championship.
