After much speculation, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s spell as manager of Manchester United came to an end on Sunday.

United’s 4-1 defeat away to Watford proved to be the death knell for Solskjaer’s tenure at the club.

SATURDAY

4.56PM: Final whistle at Vicarage Road and Solskjaer goes over to the United fans to apologise for the defeat. He’s met by boos and responds by waving goodbye. Bruno Fernandes urges supporters to blame the players instead.

5.05PM: Solskjaer addresses his team in the dressing room and admits he is unsure if it’s his final game. Some players are said to be in tears. David de Gea brands United’s performance ‘embarrassing’ and a ‘nightmare’. ‘We don’t know what to do with the ball,’ he adds.

6.30PM: A series of virtual crisis meetings are convened between co-chairmen, Joel and Avram Glazer, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and his successor Richard Arnold. The United hierarchy reluctantly reach a unanimous decision to sack Solskjaer with a £7.5million pay-off, and begin the search for their sixth manager in eight and a half years.

7.45PM: Solskjaer leaves Manchester Airport en route to his Cheshire home after United fly back from the game.

SUNDAY 

9.00AM: Solskjaer arrives at the training ground closely followed by Woodward who informs him in a meeting that his three-year reign is over. Woodward is said to be visibly upset.

10.00AM: Solskjaer gathers the players together before a warm-down session and informs them that he is no longer in charge.

10.33AM: United issue an official statement confirming that the Norwegian ‘has left his role as manager’ and stating ‘his place in the club’s history will always be secure’.

10.45AM: Solskjaer heads to the canteen for his last meal at the training ground. Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic are among the players who thank him personally for the work he has done.

1.55PM: After spending time clearing his desk, speaking to staff and giving an exit interview to MUTV, Solskjaer leaves Carrington for the last time, waving to fans and stopping to pose for selfies with some.
