Roy Keane’s wife slammed car door in his face on ‘very bad’ first date

Roy Keane’s wife slammed the car door in his face on their first ever date which he admits went “very badly”.

The Manchester United legend was better known for his crunching tackles and intimidating on-pitch demeanour than a playboy lifestyle off the pitch during his career. Keane, 51, has admitted he was more concerned about going out with “the lads” than chasing women in those days.

But while playing for Nottingham Forest as a youngster, he met his future wife Theresa Doyle in 1992 after a few drinks at a club. And despite women “not being a big thing” for him at the time, the Irishman asked Theresa out on a proper first date – which could not have gone any worse.

Keane explained on the Tommy Tiernan Show: “We probably really only had one proper date which wasn’t good really. It went very badly.

“I picked her up at the City Ground at Forest and [previously] I’d met her when I’d had a few drinks so the chat was slightly different.

“We went for a spin and I said ‘Do you fancy going to the pictures?’ because you don’t have to chat too much. And she said ‘No, I went last night with my friends’. I said ‘You know, there’s other movies on.”

Keane then asked his now-wife of 25 years whether she wanted to go for a drink – to which the answer was another resounding no.

He added: “So I literally drove back, this is all within 10-15 minutes. She said ‘What are you doing?’ and I said ‘Well, you don’t want to go for a drink or go to the pictures, what else can we do?’

“She got out. I said ‘See you next week’ and she replied ‘I don’t think so’ and slammed the door. That was my first date.”

Luckily, the legendary United captain went on to salvage the relationship, with the couple going on to marry in 1997. Keane told the Sunday Times in the early-2000s that his wife was the “rock” in his life.

The Sky Sports pundit and Theresa have five children together – Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.
