‘They played like CHAMPIONS’: Rio Ferdinand insists Arsenal HAVE to win the league after Man United victory… and praises Mikel Arteta’s side for putting the Red Devils ‘in a chokehold’
- Arsenal dominated Manchester United towards the end of the game on Sunday
- They are five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand
- Ferdinand praised Arteta for his role in turning around the Gunners’ fortunes
Rio Ferdinand has suggested Arsenal ‘played like champions’ during their thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.
The Gunners took all three points late on in the heavyweight clash at the Emirates thanks to Eddie Nketiah’s second goal of the game, securing a win that allowed them to stay five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand.
Speaking on his show FIVE, Ferdinand praised the Gunners for refusing to settle for a draw in the match, claiming they had their opponents ‘in a chokehold’ during the closing moments of the game.

The former defender said Arsenal ‘played like champions’ during the win at the Emirates
‘You lot can’t not win the league now’, Ferdinand insisted, speaking to co-host Joel Beya, an Arsenal fan
‘You lot played like champions yesterday. I was sitting there watching it with my two sons and I turned to one and said, “Boy, these lot look like champions already with the way they are playing”.
‘The telling factor for me was when they went one down. There was zero panic, it was so calm. It was like, “We know we’re going to get chances, we’re going to get back into it”, and they did.
‘They were so calm and cool, composed and confident. It made me sit back and as soon as they scored the one I thought, “They’re going to win this”.
‘It got to 2-2 and I thought Man United would take a draw, but Arsenal didn’t just settle for it, being all those points ahead it would have been easy for them to take it and be happy they hadn’t lost.
‘They played with an authority. We’re going to strangle the life out of Man United. They had Man United in a chokehold the last 15 minutes of the game and they went onto win that game and they deserved it. No negativity from my side of the table.’

He heaped praise on Mikel Arteta for his role in transforming the Gunners’ fortunes this year
The former United man went onto heap praise on Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who has led the revolution of the side after a disappointing couple of years.
‘Patience and time’, Ferdinand began. ‘Getting a manager you believe in, the club did in Arteta.
‘Pep said this when I interviewed him about Arteta, he said, ‘The guy works so hard. he’s such a hard worker, he’s so passionate, so involved, so engrossed in what he’s doing, and he knows what he’s doing”.
‘You can see why the club have taken him and stuck by him at the beginning when it wasn’t going so great. Because they saw the long picture of what it looked like.
‘The big difference between the two sides was one manager looked like he had been there for the time he had, Arteta, and one looked like he was at the beginning of his journey.’
