Steven Gerrard was named as the new manager of Aston Villa, and it’s fair to say Rangers supporters have not taken the news well.

Last season the Englishman won the Gers’ first Scottish League title in ten years and did so without losing a single League match.

It was a phenomenal campaign which successfully ended arch-rivals Celtic’snine year reign over the top division of Scottish football.

However, despite the Blues currently leading the table yet again, Gerrard will replace Dean Smith who was sacked after Villa's 1-0 away defeat to Southampton.

And supporters have not taken to the news kindly, as the former Liverpool captain was branded a “helmet” on social media.

“’I’m not going anywhere’ aye no worries ya helmet” said one unhappy Rangers supporter.

“Appreciate the work he done in the 3 years, from a shambles to Champions. Sadly, a very snide exit is a poor way to end,” added another frustrated fan.

One fuming supporter wrote: “You’re a helmet Gerrard. You said after the game the other day Rangers first no matter what. Away you go you rocket. Onwards and upwards for the team now."

Gerrard replaces former Villa manager Dean Smith who was the latest Premier League manager to be sacked.

Smith was relieved of his duties after a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats.

His fate was sealed shortly after their 1-0 loss to Southampton at St Marys.

Gerrard inherits a side low in confidence and only two points away from the relegation zone.

Villa’s recent disastrous run has seen them drop down to 16th position, where they are now treading water above the dreaded relegation zone.

His reign will kick off at Villa Park, where the Clarets will host Brighton and Hove Albion.

Graham Potter’s side are also enduring a poor run of their own, having not won a Premier League match since September.
