Paul Pogba to miss World Cup as Man Utd flop has surgery after Juventus move

Paul Pogba looks certain to miss this year's World Cup in Qatar after undergoing surgery.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed the Frenchman won't play for the Old Lady again until January after he sustained a knee injury in pre-season.

The former Manchester United midfielder had hoped to return to training this month but subsequent examinations concluded that he would be out for an extended period.

The 29-year-old helped his nation win the World Cup in Russia four years ago, putting one in the back of the net in the 4-2 win over Croatia, while he also featured in the side that won the Nations League last October.

Pogba said during the World Cup: "It might be my last World Cup… I'm realistic, we don't know if I'll be called up, maybe other players will be better than me. I hope I'll play more. I've already had the chance to play two, some can only dream to play one."

The news will come as a huge blow to Juventus, too. Pogba made the return to the side in July after his United contract expired- but he is yet to make an appearance for the club in his second stint.

"We will realistically get him [Pogba] back in January," said Allegri in a press conference ahead of the Old Lady’s Champions League group stage opener against Paris Saint-Germain.

"This morning, Pogba trained for the second time but then stopped, and it was then decided that he undergo surgery. The World Cup is not my problem, Juventus’ problem is that he comes back in January."

The Serie A giants had confirmed the player underwent surgery after training on Monday and that the operation was a success.

France manager Didier Deschamps is expected to make his squad selection at the end of next month. The deadline for World Cup squads is on November 13. The competition starts on November 20.
