Pablo Mari has been pictured for the first time since being stabbed in a Italian supermarket.
The Arsenal defender, who is currently on loan at Serie A side Monza, was rushed to hospital after being one of six people to be attacked by a knife wielding man in a shopping centre in Italy. One of the victims has already lost their life, while another two are believed to be in a serious condition.
Mari suffered woulds to his back that were sustained by a slashing motion. However, Mari posted a photo of him in his hospital bed in what is his first public message since the attack happened.
"After the hard time we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances, and to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving," Mari tweeted.
The attack happened on Thiursday afternoon at the Milanofiori shopping centre in Assago. Rai News understands the man took a knife from a supermarket before attacking people within his vicinity.
Member of the public heroically rushed to stop the attacker, before members from the Carabinieri, one of Italy's law enforcement agencies, intervened and took control of the terrifying situation. The attacker's motives remain unclear, but Italian investigators have already ruled out the possibility of terrorism feeding his intentions.
"Now that we are far away we are calmer but we were really terrified, we did not understand what was happening, we saw people running away," said one girl who witnessed the horrifying events. ]
Monza CEO Adriano Gallianni also detailed the wounds Maru suffered. “Pablo Mari has quite a deep cut to his back, but fortunately it did not reach any vital organs like the lungs or anything else.," Mari added. "
His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly. He has some lesions, but not very serious. He is conscious and getting stitches.”
