Former Newcastle star Faustino Asprilla enjoyed a two-year spell at the club between 1996-1998 – and the Colombian was a big character off the pitch as well as on it.

Asprilla arrived from Parma for £6.7m and at the time, Newcastle were ahead of Manchester United in the title race, but the club had to settle for second as Sir Alex Ferguson's men won the division.

The forward scored nine goals during his time on Tyneside, but during his spell at Newcastle Aprilla reportedly stopped a hitman from killing the Paraguay goalkeeper during a World Cup qualifying match.

The crazy life of Asprilla has continued into his retirement though, as the star also hired a porn star just to attend his 50th birthday two years ago.

November 10 marks the birthday of the former Newcastle forward, but his celebrations this year may not be as wild as the events that went down two years ago.

Asprilla invited porn star Esperanza Gomez to 'blow out his candle' for his 50th birthday after flirting with her on social media, and the conversation started when Gomez posted a video of herself playing with a cockerel in a garden.

Gomez responded to Asprilla by saying "I'm going to bring my cockerel to your farm", and the former striker replied saying: "I'm waiting for you and your cockerel here so he plays with Lagrimon. I hope he doesn't pluck him.

"While you're at it, you can accompany me to blow out the candle as I'm turning 50 this year."

Although Asprilla looked to schedule a raunchy meeting for his birthday, the Colombian ensured that a hitman didn't make his meeting with Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert in 1997.

Asprilla revealed the gunman called his hotel room after both he and Chilavert were sent off in a World Cup qualifier in Asuncion, but refused outright and was shocked at the proposal.

Speaking on a documentary broadcast on Colombian television channel TelePacifico, Asprilla said: "What? Are you crazy? You'll destroy Colombian football, you can’t do that.

"No, no, no, no. What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch."

The hitman in question was later killed in a drug-related shootout in 2004, but the request unfortunately wasn't an uncommon one, after Colombia defender Andres Escobar was murdered outside a bar in Medellin in 1994 for an own goal he scored at the World Cup in the United States.
