  • Newcastle United fans have reacted to the full reasons behind Ivan Toney’s ban
  • Toney was at the club between 2015-2018 but spent most of his time out on loan
  • The full reasons for Toney’s eight-month ban from football were revealed today

Newcastle United fans have slammed Ivan Toney after the full reasons for his eight-month ban from football were released this morning.

The forward was diagnosed with a gambling addition after breaching 232 betting rules.

In the FA’s bombshell written report, published today, it is revealed that Toney:

  • Placed 13 bets on his own team between August 2017 and March 2018, with 11 of those made against Newcastle, his parent club, while on loan at Wigan
  • Informed a friend that he would start his next club’s match in March 2018
  • Used other people’s accounts to place bets despite initially denying the allegations
  • Admitted to lying during his first interview with the FA when questioned about the gambling charges
  • Suspected of having a separate mobile phone to place bets, which he did not hand to the FA during their investigation.
  • Still bets on other sports and casino games and is ‘determined to address his gambling problem with therapy’ during the ban

Within the FA’s report, it also revealed that the striker did not play in any of the matches where he bet against his parent club.

A section of the FA’s report on Friday read: ‘Of those 29 bets, there were 13 bets on Mr Toney’s own team to lose in 7 different matches between 22 August 2017 and 3 March 2018.

The forward played for the club between 2015 and 2018 before leaving to join Peterborough

‘Mr Toney did not play in any of those matches where he placed bets against his loan club as he was not in the match squad or against his parent club as he was on loan.

‘Of the 13 bets 11 were against Newcastle whilst Mr Toney was on loan at another club. The other 2 bets related to a game between Wigan v Aston Villa whilst the player was on loan at Wigan but he was not part of the squad.

‘A further 15 of the 126 bets or instructions to bet were placed by Mr Toney to score in 9 different matches all of which he played in.

‘All of those 15 bets or instructions to bet were initiated by Mr Toney at a time when it would not have been public knowledge that he was starting or playing in the fixture.’

After 13 goals in 60 appearances for Northampton Town, Toney signed for Premier League side Newcastle in 2015. However, the Englishman spent most of his career out on loan to the likes of Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe United before signing for Peterborough United on a permanent deal in 2018.

Between August 2017 and March 2018, 11 of those 13 bets placed on his own team were made against Newcastle.

Now, Newcastle fans have had their say on the matter.

One user wrote: ‘Ivan Toney bet on us to lose 11 times whilst out on loan, smart betting at the time to be fair.’

‘Toney was trying to profit from our downfall while on loan at other clubs,’ another user tweeted.

Another fan seemed to find the amusing side of it, tweeting: ‘Ivan Toney betting on Newcastle to lose while he was still on our books is low-key hilarious tbf.’

In the 2017/18 season, Newcastle finished 10th in the league, with just 12 wins from 38 games.

The Magpies, who lost 18 games that season, finished level on points with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

In that season, Toney spent the first half of the campaign on loan to Wigan Athletic, before joining Scunthorpe United on a short term deal for the rest of the season in January.

One Newcastle fan was quick to take a swipe at the lack of minutes the forward had played for the club, tweeting: ‘Ivan Toney placed more bets against #NUFC (11) than he played Premier League minutes for the club (10).’

‘Ivan Toney bet on #NUFC to lose 11 times while contracted to the club.

‘Bet he made a fortune,’ another user tweeted.

Toney’s ban, which is one of the longest in football history, was initially set to be 15 months before the FA cut the suspension by almost half following his gambling addiction diagnosis

Following the news this morning, Brentford have vowed to offer support to the forward through his gambling addiction.

The ban will prevent Toney from playing again until January 16 next year, reflecting both the number of breaches and the fact that the bets were placed over an extended four-year period between February 2017 and January 2021.

It has also been confirmed that the forward will not be allowed to train until September.
