Newcastle eye Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen as first signing under new owners

Newcastle United's first signing under the new Saudi owners may have been identified as Barcelona's Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, according to reports in Spain.

Since Newcastle became the richest club in the world following the takeover that was completed in October, there has been constant speculation on who will be targeted by the new owners, and Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen has emerged as the inaugural signing to lead a new era.

The new owners are reportedly worth a cool £320billion, meaning that transfer fees and salaries are not expected to be an issue, and money is something that Barcelona are desperate for amid their current financial crisis.

Newcastle are also in need of a new goalkeeper, with Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow not expected to meet the high standards that the new owners have set.

According to a report from Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Newcastle want to sign the German national goalkeeper and are willing to offer €55m (£47m) to Barcelona for the 29-year-old's services.

Ter Stegen is considered by many as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and with his contract at Barcelona ending in 2025, the Catalan side could hold out for a huge fee from Newcastle, which they desperately need.

Although under usual circumstances this deal would appear ridiculous, but due to the financial power that Newcastle now wield and the necessity at which Barcelona need the money, it could pressurise them into a major sale with a war chest awaiting on Tyneside.

However, the imminent arrival of new manager and club legend Xavi Hernandez may prove to be a stumbling block, with many players excited to work under a Barcelona legend.
