Erik ten Hag reviews the Newcastle defeat
Newcastle United’s outstanding campaign under Eddie Howe has persuaded the club’s owners to reach deeper into their pockets ahead of the summer transfer window. A modest budget of £20million plus any extra revenue from transfer sales was initially put forward for the Tyneside outfit to spend on players.
However, the Telegraph reports that club executives are drawing up a bumper 16-man shortlist to help reinforce Newcastle’s squad. Among those of interest to them are James Maddison, Moises Caicedo, Conor Gallagher, Ivan Toney, Kaoru Mitoma, Kalvin Phillips, Jarrod Bowen, Declan Rice, Scott McTominay, Harvey Barnes and Kieran Tierney.
Meanwhile, they are also linked to plenty of players from abroad including Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram, Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga, Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby and Napoli duo Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Although, it is understood that there have been no final decisions made on priority targets with Newcastle still working on a long list basis at this time. Early transfer meetings had stressed the need to tighten up spending in order to meet the Financial Fair Play rules having spent around £250m on players over the last three transfer windows.
The only player to be sold during that time was Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest for a fee of around £12m. But with Newcastle pushing for Champions League football next season the need for greater depth is more important than ever.
Instead, the Magpies intend to sell several players and take on a string of new sponsors in order to keep them in the green. A new shirt sponsor is expected to be unveiled for next season while their income will be significantly increased by TV revenue should they qualify for European football next term.

Newcastle are currently sat in fourth place in the Premier League, three points clear of closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand. They play Spurs this Sunday in a match that is absolutely crucial in their bid for a Champions League spot.
A victory would give them a solid cushion heading into their final seven fixtures of the campaign which include ties against Everton, Southampton, Arsenal, Leeds, Leicester City and Chelsea.
