Mykhaylo Mudryk in trouble as Chelsea targeting a Jurgen Klopp favourite

Mykhaylo Mudryk has been unable to nail down a regular place in the Chelsea team since his £88million blockbuster January transfer and is yet to score a goal in his new team’s colours, while his situation could yet become even more worrisome as Todd Boehly is reportedly targeting another winger that could push the Ukrainian further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge in the form of Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.

Journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Zaha is one of Chelsea’s potential transfer targets this summer, as the Ivorian’s contract at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season. The Blues are currently stacked in terms of forwards as in addition to Mudryk they have Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among others all on their books.

Though many of those are expected to depart Stamford Bridge as part of a clear-out following the £600million-plus spent by Boehly and co in the previous two transfer windows. While Zaha would command hefty wages, bringing in a player of his quality on a free transfer would no-doubt appeal to the hierarchy at a time when they on the edge of financial fair play rules and it is unknown whether they will be able to continue spending at the rate of the past 12 months.

Zaha has been Palace’s star man since returning from Manchester United in 2014 and his quality in the Premier League has been undeniable, as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that he is “a world-class player” following one of the Reds’ clashes with Palace.

“They are really good at counter-attacks and set pieces, Wilfried Zaha is a world-class player and he gets into a one-on-one situation and we’re one down,” Klopp said after Liverpool beat Palace 4-3 at Anfield in 2019.

While Chelsea are not the only team interested in Zaha on a free transfer this summer, as he has been mentioned with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia and could follow in Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps. Al-Ittihad have reportedly offered him a contract of £9million-a-season after tax, but he is set to rebuff their advances and remain in Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille and Roma are said to be teams interested in Zaha should he wish to leave the Premier League though Tottenham in addition to Chelsea could offer him the chance to stay in England at a traditional top-six club.

Though it is unlikely that either will be able to provide him with the opportunity to compete in the Champions League next season.

Mudryk will likely be hoping that further competition for his place in the Chelsea team is not brought in this summer, as the 22-year-old hopes to cement himself firmly in the thoughts of incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of next season.
