Jose Mourinho ‘wants to raid former club Manchester United for Nemanja Matic, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot’ as he looks to regenerate Roma with Premier League cast-offs this summer following Tammy Abraham’s success
- Roma are going to fall just short in their race for the top four places in Serie A
- Jose Mourinho is looking to add to his squad to bridge the gap in the summer
- Reports in Italy have shared his plan to focus on signing Premier League players
- Mourinho reportedly wants Nemanja Matic, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot to join
Jose Mourinho is ready to offer lifelines to four Premier League cast-offs as he looks to use his knowledge of English football to bolster Roma’s pursuit of the Champions League.
According to newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho is eyeing up a quartet of Premier League stars, three of which are with one of his former clubs, Manchester United.
Mourinho is no stranger to bringing players from the Premier League to Serie A, having picked up Tammy Abraham and Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Chelsea and Arsenal respectively this season.

The success of Abraham in particular, who has netted 24 goals in all competitions so far this season, is said to have convinced Mourinho to hunt for hidden gems in the Premier League again this summer.
Mourinho, the former Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United manager, ‘appreciates’ Premier League players because of their ‘dynamism, quality and strength’.
Nemanja Matic, who recently informed United of his desire to leave at the end of the season, Diogo Dalot and Eric Bailly are three of the four Mourinho is reportedly after for next season.
Matic, 33, is one of Mourinho’s most loved players and is attainable given he will leave Manchester United on a free.
Mourinho has coached Matic for two different teams and Roma is reportedly thinking seriously about the Serbian as a fix for a midfield that is expected to lose Jordan Veretout.
Matic is physically imposing, is tactically intelligent and would appear a natural fit for Italian football, even if his age – he turns 34 in August – is a drawback for any long-term deal.
Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz is reportedly the other Premier League player Mourinho is keen on
Both Bailly and Dalot, who has proven himself in Serie A before on loan at AC Milan, are no longer part of United’s plans and are set to be deemed surplus to requirements under new boss Erik ten Hag.
Corriere dello Sport say that Mourinho is enthusiastic about the pair because they would be cheap purchases but also important for building the team of the future.
Bailly is 28 years old but Dalot is just 23 and has plenty of time to develop and improve.
United’s ‘great summer revolution’ is said to be one reason why Mourinho is tracking his old side closely as he continues to hunt for bargain buys.
They are unlikely to be considered top players but they would improve the experience and quality of the whole team.
The other name that has come up is that of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz.
Luiz is one of Mourinho’s favourite players and at just 23, the Brazilian is still yet to hit his best form.
The success of Tammy Abraham this season is said to have put a focus on Premier League stars
He holds a valuation in the region of €35million (£29.5m) and with his Villa contract due to expire in 2023, it is a move to monitor.
Mourinho likes him a lot for his great quality and regular minutes, as well as European football, may well entice Luiz to try something new in a crucial World Cup year.
Roma enjoyed great success with Premier League purchases last summer, namely Abraham and goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
That seems to have convinced Mourinho and General Manager Tiago Pinto to urge owners The Friedkin Family to continue writing the cheques for better players.
Friedkin have already invested €548.8m (£463m) in the last two years, of which about €200m (£169m) for the purchase of the club.
But any summer splurge cannot arrive without those heading out of the exit and increased interest in Veretout, with Newcastle believed to be among them, is expected to make it hard to keep him.
Ebrima Darboe and Amadou Diawara are reportedly to leave on loan while others such as Eldor Shomurodov are believed to be too ‘difficult’ to ‘sell them outright’.
