Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard reviews Bournemouth game
Mauricio Pochettino would be ready to approve the signing of Barcelona midfielder Gavi if he joins Chelsea as expected before the start of next season, according to reports. The Blues are reportedly edging closer to finalising the appointment of Pochettino as their next permanent manager, with productive discussions having been held with the club’s hierarchy over the last few weeks.
The Argentine coach is widely expected to join Chelsea at some point before the start of the summer transfer window, during which he is likely to be backed with no shortage of funds to spend on new players as he sees fit. It seems as though he will be tempted to explore a move for Gavi when the bidding opens later this year, with the Barcelona ace having recently been linked with a move elsewhere amid the club’s well-documented money problems.
Gavi recently signed a new long-term contract at the Nou Camp with an eye-watering release clause of around £1billion, although the deal is now void after La Liga refused to ratify it due to the Catalan club’s ongoing financial issues. It meant that Gavi was forced to revert to his prior youth contract, which will allow him to leave Barcelona on a free transfer at the end of the campaign should he wish to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
Chelsea have been credited with a desire to take full advantage of Gavi’s situation by bringing him to Stamford Bridge over the next few months and Pochettino would be prepared to green-light the teenage midfielder’s arrival if he is appointed by the west Londoners, according to Sport. He reportedly sees Gavi as a ‘very interesting’ with the ability to shine in the Premier League and would jump at the chance to snap him up, especially without needing to pay a transfer fee in exchange for his services.

The Blues are already believed to have met with Gavi’s family as well as his agent, Ivan de la Pena, with AS claiming that positive talks have taken place regarding a potential move to Chelsea in recent months. The meeting was reportedly held with the aim of underlining Gavi’s importance to the project at Chelsea while answering any questions that his parents might have about the possibility of a move to England at the end of the season.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are likely to do everything in their power to keep hold of Gavi but will see their hands tied for as long as he remains contracted to the club on a youth basis after the reversion of his previous deal earlier this year. Xavi recently suggested that he desperately wants to avoid letting go of Gavi, who has been following in his footsteps as Barcelona’s next great hope in the middle of the park in recent years.

“Gavi is a boy that thrills us all when we see him competing like this,” said Xavi. “He puts his soul, his heart and his character on the pitch and transmits it to the rest of the team, and he is just 18. He was gifted with leadership skills.
“He projects that courage and that rage when he plays football and it’s something special to see. I already said this many times but I never get tired of praising him. Hopefully, he will never stop like this, because he has no limits.”
