Mason Greenwood left off Man Utd list as Rasmus Hojlund hint dropped

Premier League season preview: Man Utd

Mason Greenwood has not been given a shirt number at Manchester United ahead of the new Premier League season. The 21-year-old is still waiting to discover what the future holds for him at Old Trafford, with an official announcement expected to be made in due course.

Greenwood’s profile still appears on the United website but he has not been included on their list of provisional squad numbers, which was released on Thursday. However, no player has been given the No 11 shirt worn by Greenwood prior to his suspension, which suggests that an imminent return to the squad is not out of the question.

United made it clear that player numbers will be subject to change once their summer business is complete, with a brief statement reading: “Others will start the season in their existing numbers but with the possibility of change after the transfer window closes when it will be clear which other numbers in the squad are vacant.”

New signing Rasmus Hojlund is also yet to be given a squad number as he continues to recover from a back injury which is expected to keep him out for a couple of weeks. The Dane has worn No 17 at various points throughout his career, including in his final season at Atalanta, but the number is currently occupied by Fred.

The Brazilian midfielder has recently been linked with a summer move to Fenerbahce, who have offered just shy of £13million in exchange for his services, according to Fabrizio Romano. A deal could allow Hojlund to take his preferred number at United once the transfer window closes, although it remains to be seen how the situation will play out over the coming weeks.

Greenwood, meanwhile, has recently been pictured training with a private coach in his own time. The striker did not look to be firing on all cylinders during his latest session, which was caught on camera by Man Utd The Religion and uploaded to YouTube.

He was seen taking a number of shots on goal but he failed to impress with the majority of his attempts, which either sailed harmlessly over the crossbar or bounced straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. It remains to be seen whether Greenwood will eventually be welcomed back into the fold at United, with the club having taken months to reach a final verdict over the course of their investigation.

Erik ten Hag was quizzed on the topic during United’s recent pre-season tour of the USA but refused to give much away, although he insisted that he will accept whatever the Red Devils decide to do with Greenwood regardless of his own stance.

“It’s a club decision,” said the Dutchman. “Of course I have said my ideas and opinions but it’s a club decision. We all have to accept that. I can’t say so much about it, but what I say is I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what’s going to happen and what the decision will be.”
