Manchester United are reportedly interested in Ruben Neves as they look to improve their squad in the January transfer window. The Portugal international has been in fine form for Wolves this season, helping them push for European football under Bruno Lage. In order to reduce a potential fee for the midfielder, Ralf Rangnick could use some of his players in a swap deal.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, interest in Neves is building – with United named as one of the clubs keen to snap him up.

We’ve been here before, of course, with the Portugal international regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.

But, now, United appear to be back in for Neves again.

It’s easy to see why, with the likes of Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek both eager to leave the Premier League giants behind.

Scott McTominay remains infuriatingly inconsistent, with the Scotland international sublime one moment and dire the next.

Fred, too, is a player who has blown hot and cold far too often since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2018.

And while Nemanja Matic can be useful, it’s clear the Serbia international’s best days are behind him.

United, normally, spend the bulk of their transfer funds in the summer – only making signings in January when absolutely necessary.

Given the crisis that is engulfing the Red Devils, it’s clear Rangnick’s side need to add reinforcements to their squad at the earliest opportunity.

So, in order to reduce a fee for Neves, it’s possible they’ll use some of the players who want to leave Old Trafford as part of a swap deal.

Three in particular stand out.

One option could be Van de Beek, who has made just four Premier League starts since his arrival from Ajax in 2020.

The Netherlands international is eager to leave, either on loan or permanently, having fared no better following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

If Wolves lose Neves, they’ll need a top midfielder to come into the team.

And Van de Beek could be the way to go, especially given his preference to remain in the Premier League.

Another potential option to include, given his contractual situation, is Jesse Lingard.

Like Van de Beek, the England international would like to stay in the country rather than move abroad.

West Ham, who he sparkled on loan with last season, and Newcastle have both been considered frontrunners in the race to snap him up.

Yet given Wolves’ ambition, and their desire to secure European football, a transfer to Molineux may appeal.

Then, there’s Anthony Martial.

Wolves aren’t of the same calibre as teams like Sevilla, Barcelona and Juventus – who all want the Frenchman.

However, they could offer Martial a platform to show he can handle life in the Premier League – and a chance to prove United wrong.

They, out of all the players keen to leave Old Trafford, appear the trio who would be best-suited to Wolves.

And what ultimately happens with Neves is something only time will tell.

As well as the Wolves star, United have also been linked with the likes of Amadou Haidara and Boubacar Kamara – of RB Leipzig and Marseille respectively.
