Patrice Evra has warned that a number of Manchester United players could attempt to leave the club in the January transfer window as a result of their frustrations over not playing regularly under Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils are widely expected to use the mid-season market to improve their squad over the coming weeks as Ten Hag looks to boost their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

United are thought to be targeting the addition of a new striker as their biggest priority, while a right-back could also be snapped up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka if the former Crystal Palace man leaves Old Trafford next month. However, Evra believes that the Red Devils could be forced to deal with a mass exodus if Wan-Bissaka and several of his team-mates decide that they have had enough of life on the fringes.

“You always expect to strengthen, but I don’t want to go into the transfer window panicking and buying players because the fans and media are pushing for it,” Evra told Betfair. “We need to add something to the squad so we can perform much better.

“We’re probably going to need a striker, I definitely think we need a defender, [Diogo] Dalot is doing a job, Wan-Bissaka has just disappeared, so I don’t know if we need another right-back. We have competition between [Luke] Shaw and [Tyrell] Malacia.

“I definitely think we need a centre-back, a striker and a midfielder. That kind of Casemiro player, we still need experience. I’m sure Ten Hag is working with the club and they will try to get something sorted.

“This transfer window for United also depends on which players are going to leave. I think there are players that are not happy about not playing and they will try to leave.”

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how United will fare over the course of the January window, with Ten Hag particularly keen to strengthen his forward line after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo towards the end of last month. The Dutchman recently admitted that he will be looking to sign a new striker before the window draws to a close but hinted that Marcus Rashford could step up to fill the void after finding his feet at Old Trafford since the beginning of the campaign.

“I think he is capable of scoring 20 goals in the Premier League,” said Ten Hag. “He got three in the World Cup so we know the potential to score those numbers in the Premier League. When you analyse the first 14 games, we are not a problem in the front line.

“Often players have not been 100 per cent fit and I have had to play them. That was a problem in first few games, when we get players fit and available in the front line then already we will score more goals.

“We are aware we have lost a striker so we need to get one in. But he has to be the right one who brings quality into the team, not just adding to the squad. The criteria is high here at Manchester United.”
