Man Utd may relive Alexis Sanchez transfer disaster if Qatar buy club

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the West Ham game

Manchester United could risk falling into the Alexis Sanchez trap again if Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani completes a takeover. Neymar is reportedly eyeing a PSG departure this summer, and Old Trafford may well be his next destination in waiting.

According to ESPN, Neymar is ready to walk away from Paris at the end of the season, and the Ligue 1 champions are keen to offload him.

The 31-year-old forward has four years remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes and didn’t want to leave PSG when the club were actively seeking a suitor last summer.

However, he has changed his stance in the wake of 50 club ultras protesting for his exit outside his house last week.

Neymar is said to feel unwelcome in the French capital and is therefore eager to pursue a new challenge next season.

The report adds that he would prefer a blockbuster move to the Premier League, and PSG would be prepared to accept an initial loan deal with the option to buy.

Chelsea have been strongly credited with an interest in Neymar amid Todd Boehly’s relentless spending spree at Stamford Bridge.

But The Sun claim that Sheikh Jassim wants to make Brazil’s joint-record goalscorer the marquee acquisition of his first transfer window as owner if he buys United from the Glazer family.

He is said to want one of his first moves as top dog at Old Trafford to be a statement of his intentions moving forward.

But an ambitious swoop for Neymar could be more of a curse than a blessing for Erik ten Hag, given United’s recent history with ageing, high-paid wingers.

United signed Sanchez on a four-and-a-half-year deal in January 2018, sending Henrikh Mkhitaryan the other way to Arsenal.

The Chilean reportedly earned a staggering £505,000 per week in M16 but miserably failed to live up to the hype under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He registered just five goals and nine assists in 45 appearances, causing more problems than solutions to United’s dismal fortunes.

Despite his undisputed quality, Neymar’s suspect injury record and the similarly lofty salary he would demand at the Red Devils are serious red flags.

And after a decade of mismanagement under the Glazers and former chief Ed Woodward, Ten Hag can’t afford the same problems to re-emerge.
