Roy Keane has warned Manchester United fans not to listen to Harry Maguire’s comments on the club’s recent malaise. Maguire has not only been condemned for his poor performances but also his rhetoric after underwhelming results.

The England international has been maligned for a series of below par displays this season and the Red Devils have not improved in performance levels since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed.

Maguire was slammed by supporters in the wake of the humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford and his red card in the 4-1 humbling against Watford led to Solskjaer being jettisoned.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested not all is well in Ralf Rangnick’s camp with concerns over the togetherness of the squad and whether some players are on board with the interim German boss’ tactics.

Maguire sat out injured in United’s recent 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves, as the club’s hopes for a top four finish took another blow.

But the defender has repeated that performance levels must change, starting with Monday’s FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa.

“We are letting the fans down and have to come out fighting,” Maguire said.

“We have big players in the team, leaders. I am sick of repeating myself, but it can’t continue like this. We need to go on a proper run, starting Monday.

“I’ve obviously seen a lot of criticism and a lot of it is absolutely correct. From what the fans and ex-players have said, we get it.

“A lot of it is justified and we all have to take massive responsibility, myself as captain as much as anyone, if not more. We need to start winning and playing well as a team.”

United great Keane has been one of Maguire’s fiercest critics and the reaction to his controversial celebration after scoring on England duty in November dominated headlines.

Keane labelled Maguire’s message ‘rubbish’ and urged supporters to focus solely on his efforts on the pitch under Rangnick instead.

“How many times has he said that? I wouldn’t listen too much to what Harry has to say,” Keane said on ITV.

“I judge a player on what he does on a football pitch, not what rubbish he comes out with about ‘we need to stick together’.

“Judge a player on what happens on a football pitch.

“United aren’t doing enough, but Aston Villa at home, you’d expect them to turn up and put in a good performance. It’s not been good enough recently.”

The FA Cup represents United’s best opportunity to win a trophy this season with a long run in the Champions League a daunting task based on current form.

Aston Villa, however, are challenging opponents for the Red Devils and have already won at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season before Dean Smith’s sacking.

This time, new boss Steven Gerrard will be desperate to get one over the side he shared such a bitter rivalry with during his time at Liverpool.
