Man Utd haven’t released Greenwood for big reason despite blocking return

Mason Greenwood remains under contract at Manchester United for a significant reason, despite the club deciding against sanctioning his return. But Greenwood is unlikely to play for the Red Devils again as he prepares to resume his football career away from Old Trafford.

On Monday, United announced that the club had mutually agreed to part ways with Greenwood after completing a six-month investigation into his January 2022 arrest.

Greenwood denied all allegations. The alleged victim withdrew the allegations and their support from the police’s investigation in April of that year.

Six months later, in October, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

But in February, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against the 21-year-old, allowing United to start an internal investigation.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Greenwood cooperated fully with the Greater Manchester Police by allowing access to his devices.

United later heard explanations for the images and audio recording posted on Instagram by the alleged victim on Sunday, January 30, 2022.

The club are satisfied that Greenwood didn’t commit the alleged offences and wouldn’t have hesitated to terminate his contract if they believed otherwise.

However, due to the outcome of their probe into Greenwood’s arrest, United didn’t believe they had grounds to terminate the forward’s £75,000-a-week deal.

And the club plan to support Greenwood in completing a move away, whether on loan or on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2025 and has earned his full salary throughout the entirety of his suspension.

But United don’t expect him to represent that club again, even if he leaves on loan and returns with one year left on his contract next summer.

In an aligning statement with United’s announcement, Greenwood said: “Today’s decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me.

“The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club.

“I thank the club for their support since I joined aged seven. There will always be a part of me which is United.

“I am enormously grateful to my family and all my loved ones for their support, and it is now for me to repay the trust those around me have shown.

“I intend to be a better footballer, but most importantly, a good father, a better person, and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch.”
