Manchester United’s positive relationship with the agents of PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo could swing proceedings in their favour if they decide to pursue a move for the 23-year-old in the January transfer window, according to reports. The Red Devils are said to be keen admirers of Gakpo, who has established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young talents in recent seasons and is expected to be in high demand at the turn of the year.

United are not the only club to have taken a liking to Gakpo, though, with Leeds, Southampton and a host of other Premier League sides believed to be keeping tabs on his situation at PSV before the transfer market re-opens in January. However, it seems as though the Red Devils may have the upper hand in the race for Gakpo’s signature as a result of their strong bond with his agents.

According to Fabrizio Romano on The United Stand, the fact that Gakpo’s representatives also oversee the career of United boss Erik ten Hag could prove to be a ‘really big point’ with regards to the forward making a January move to Old Trafford. Ten Hag is fully aware of Gakpo’s talents from his time in the Eredivisie while managing Ajax and did try to sign him for United over the summer, but the Red Devils eventually opted to land Antony for a transfer fee of around £85million.

United chiefs were said to have agreed personal terms with Gakpo but had not made an official bid to PSV, who managed to keep hold of their prized asset after the all-important deadline in spite of a late approach from Leeds. PSV director Marcel Brands recently insisted that although Gakpo’s pre-season preparations were disrupted by interest from elsewhere, he never felt as though the player would leave before the end of the summer window.

“Cody has had a difficult preparation with us because he has spoken with Manchester United, they didn’t come until mid-August and it didn’t go through,” Brands told Voetbal Primeur earlier this month.

“I even think Cody wouldn’t have left at the end of the transfer window if the right amount had been offered. There has been no bid that approached the lower limit of what we agreed with Cody.”

There is said to be a possibility that Gakpo could be targeted by United once again in January after making a hugely productive start to the season at PSV. He has already chipped in with eight goals and six assists in just seven league appearances for the Dutch heavyweights to earn a call-up to the Netherlands squad for their upcoming Nations League matches against Poland and Belgium.

Gakpo also led the charge last season with a total of 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions to further justify his status as one of the Eredivisie’s standout forwards and catch the eyes of United and several other clubs. He remains tied down to PSV until the summer of 2026, though, which suggests that his current employers will demand a significant fee to let him go before the end of January.
