Manchester United continued their charge towards the Premier League top four with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred struck to give the home side all three points. Express Sport will now take a look at four things we learned from the showdown.

Rashford matches Cantona

Marcus Rashford was down and out at United last season, toiling as the club endured a nightmare season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

But the England international continued his electric form for club and country by opening the scoring at Old Trafford against Steve Cooper’s side.

Rashford has now scored 10 goals for United across all competitions this season and his latest strike against Forest has seen him draw level with Eric Cantona on 64 Premier League goals.

He took his effort well, hitting the ball first time after a corner from Christian Eriksen.

Erik ten Hag deserves credit for rebuilding Rashford’s confidence after the shambles of last season.

And his impressive performance shows why United didn’t go all in for Cody Gakpo, too. The Netherlands international plays on the left but that flank, these days, belongs to one man only.

Martial steps up

This was United’s first Premier League game since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who saw his contract terminated following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan last month.

And Anthony Martial made the most of his opportunity, with the France international converting smartly just three minutes after Rashford’s opener.

This is a big season for the France international, who has often blown hot and cold throughout his spell at Old Trafford.

But Martial has done well whenever called upon and, while United want a striker, it appears they can finally rely on the 27-year-old to produce the goods.

Certainly, he looks happier than ever. Ten Hag has helped put a smile on his face – which is another thing the Dutchman warrants praising for.

Luke Shaw a reliable presence

Before the game, eyebrows were raised when Ten Hag decided to deploy Luke Shaw at centre-back.

A left-back by trade, the England international was preferred over Harry Maguire – who was only deemed good and fit enough for the bench.

But Shaw was assured throughout the showdown, despite being played out of position, helping to keep Forest – and former team-mate Jesse Lingard – at bay.

United were without Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez for the Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

And there’s a sense they’ll be even stronger at the back when the pair return.

Casemiro a bargain

When United signed Casemiro back in the summer, some believed the Brazil international would end up being another Bastian Schweinsteiger.

How wrong they were.

This was again another fine performance from the Brazil international, who continues to dictate the midfield with astonishing authority with each passing match.

The former Real Madrid star’s tackle in the first half paved the way for Martial to score, with the Samba star then helping to dictate the contest.

While some fans wanted Frenkie de Jong to sign instead, Casemiro definitely seems like a world-class alternative.
