Manchester United have reportedly delayed a decision on the future of Mason Greenwood so they can consult members of their women’s team.

Greenwood has been suspended by the club since January 2022 after he was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Those charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February and United have since opened an internal investigation into Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford.

According to The Guardian, the club's women's players will be asked for their views on whether Greenwood should be retained. They include England trio Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Katie Zelem, plus two France players, Aissatou Tounkara and Estelle Cascarino, who are still involved in the World Cup.

The Lionesses face Colombia while France take on Australia in the quarter-finals on Saturday, with the final on Sunday, August 20. If Man United's remaining World Cup players reach the final, they would not return to the country until the end of the month.

Greenwood, whose Old Trafford contract does not expire until 2025, has not been given a provisional squad number, casting further doubt over his future at the club.

However, he is said to have the support of manager Erik Ten Hag and the majority of the first-team squad after it was suggested they were open to Greenwood returning to the club.

A source previously claimed: “All the players believe he deserves a second chance because he’s innocent in the eyes of the law.

"He didn’t have the opportunity to clear his name in court because the charges were dropped, so the players feel like he has been left in limbo. They know it will be difficult but they are willing to support him through it, and protect him."

However, Man United legend Wayne Rooney has urged Greenwood to move and have a fresh start.

“It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck,” Rooney said of the one-cap England forward.

“So for Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football. But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch-22. I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else.

“He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time – it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.”
