Manchester United could have the perfect Paul Pogba replacement ready and waiting should Mauricio Pochettino become their new manager, with the former Tottenham boss extremely fond of one midfield star.

Manchester United have finally sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his side were defeated 4-1 by Watford, which caused the board to schedule an emergency meeting, resulting in his departure.

Michael Carrick has been promoted on a temporary basis while the club search for an interim boss to lead them until the end of the season, with multiple candidates naturally being linked with a move for the permanent job.

One familiar name is Mauricio Pochettino, with the Paris Saint Germain manager previously linked with United on multiple occasions following his departure from fellow Premier League side Tottenham.

The Argentinian is now favourite for the United job, and Pochettino could have the perfect replacement for Paul Pogba if he is appointed.

Solskjaer was sacked after United managed just one win across their last seven Premier League games, but a big talking point throughout the season was the omission of Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch midfielder was signed by Solskjaer from Ajax in 2020, but barely featured under his tenure, despite cries from the fans to use him as a solution to the stale midfield of Scott McTominay and Fred.

Solskjaer bows out with a sense of ‘what might have been’ if van de Beek was used more in his side, but potential new boss Pochettino is quite the fan of the Dutchman.

Van de Beek could go from being an outcast to becoming a crucial part of United’s team, as Pochettino has heaped praise on the Dutchman in the past.

Pochettino was Spurs boss as they completed a stunning comeback to beat Ajax in the Champions League semi-final, with van de Beek scoring earlier in the two-legged tie, and ahead of their match-up Pochettino told El Pais: “Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him.

“But he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals.

“Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek. I like very much.

“They have a young player, from the academy, in each line, that shows what the team is.”

Van de Beek only made 22 league appearances under Solskjaer since arriving from Ajax in 2020, and what was meant to be his dream move has ended up being somewhat of a nightmare.

However, if Pochettino is appointed then the Dutchman’s fortunes may change, and van de Beek could show the promise that was expected when he arrived at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was superb for Ajax and was linked with moved across Europe, including Real Madrid, but chose United to help them to the next level.

Pochettino could be the man to finally put United back on the map, and it could be the perfect appointment for van de Beek.
