Manchester United look extremely unlikely to lure reported target Florian Wirtz away from Bayer Leverkusen, judging on recent comments from Bayer Leverkusen’s director, Rudi Voller. The Red Devils have already started their new direction under Ralf Rangnick after the German tactician came in to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick was appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season, where he’ll then move into a consultancy role.

But he is already making his mark behind the scenes it seems with Wirtz reportedly one of four wonderkids from the Bundesliga he is eyeing a move for along with Luca Netz, Eric Martel and Armel Bella-Kotchap.

Wirtz took over the mantle from Kai Havertz at Leverkusen after the latter moved to Chelsea in 2020.

And he’s enjoyed a stellar campaign this season with the 18-year-old scoring eight goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions.

That kind of form has attracted the attention of United, with Wirtz said to be valued at around £60million.

However, Leverkusen chief Voller insists they plan to keep Wirtz at the club for many more years.

“A year ago, most of them probably thought that Bayer Leverkusen would not get a player like Kai Havertz for decades,” Voller told Bild.

“Now Florian has made such a fantastic leap again in the past six months – this development amazes me.

“He’s actually still an A-youth, you shouldn’t forget that.

“Not only through the contractual situation – also through the trust we have built in him and his family, we know that he will be in good hands here for a few more years.

“We want Florian to stay with us for a few more years.

“That is important for us and for the whole Bundesliga. And I think it’s his plan too.

“At some point, maybe day X will come and Florian will be too small here, similar to Kai. But that will still take a while.”

United aren’t short of options in the more advanced midfield role with Bruno Fernandes very much the first choice.

It’s been suggested that a midfielder capable of sitting in front of the defence is a more urgent matter for United.

Fred and Scott McTominay have continued to be the go-to pairing in midfield since Rangnick arrived.
