De Gea gives update on Man Utd future ahead of Sevilla match
Manchester United star David De Gea still isn’t guaranteed to be playing for the club next season. While there’s talk of the 32-year-old agreeing a new deal, the Spain international is yet to officially renew his stay. A parting of ways remains a possibility come the summer transfer window – nearly eight years on from his failed move to Real Madrid that would have seen Keylor Navas move in the opposite direction…
Back in 2015, De Gea wanted out.
The Spain international wanted to move to Real Madrid, having grown frustrated at United and their plight in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
Louis van Gaal was manager at the time and he brought in Sergio Romero amid the uncertainty over De Gea’s future.
But he felt the Argentina international was still short of the quality he desired. Then, on transfer deadline day, dramatic scenes unfolded.
United agreed a swap deal with Real that would see Navas head to Old Trafford, with De Gea getting his wish of playing for Los Blancos.

Yet at the 11th hour, the deal broke down.
It is believed a faulty fax machine scuppered the arrangement, with both De Gea and Navas proceeding to stay at their respective clubs.
Navas would later confess he never wanted to leave Real and cried upon learning the news he’d be staying at the Bernabeu.
“I cried that night when I found out I was staying, it was a build-up of emotions. I didn’t want to leave, Madrid is my home,” he said shortly after the swap deal broke down.
“I never wanted to leave Real Madrid. My agent told me to be alert to my phone.

“We had to go to Barajas [airport], although I never actually got on a plane – I was in a waiting room.
“I thought that if God wanted me to leave Madrid, it would be for the best, but he didn’t want me to and I’m still here.”
Then, in 2021, Navas also admitted he ‘burst’ with emotions and branded the day as being one of the ‘worst of his life’.
“This was one of the worst days of my life,” the current Nottingham Forest star explained.
“I didn’t cry that day, but I did after all was said and done when I was with my wife.

“I was waiting in the airport even without suitcases. I was not on the plane, but I was near.
“In the end, after everything that happened, many complicated moments, we’re human and eventually the time comes when you burst.”
Fast-forward to now, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with De Gea.
United are in talks with the veteran over a new deal but want the shot-stopper to take a reduction on his current salary of £375,000-a-week.
De Gea, for his part, has long made it clear he’d love to retire while playing in Manchester.
But there seems to be more and more of a feeling that the Spain international is now a player past his best.
And after recent errors against Sevilla and West Ham, many United fans appear to be inclined to let the veteran go and pursue a new challenge come the end of the season.
Manager Erik ten Hag did, however, defend De Gea after his latest clanger at the London Stadium on Sunday.
“(De Gea) has the most clean sheets in the Premier League, we would not be in this position without him,” said the 53-year-old. “No concerns.
“It happens but as a team you have to deal with it, show character and resilience.
“We want him to stay and to extend his contract.”
