Man City ace Rico Lewis struck by lighter in ugly scenes vs Burnley

Man City: Guardiola says 'almost impossible' to repeat treble

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis was struck with a lighter in unsavoury scenes during Friday’s Premier League opener against Burnley. The object was thrown from a section containing home fans at Turf Moor, leaving Lewis in distress on the floor and a sour note on the season curtain-raiser.

Erling Haaland opened his account for the 2023/24 campaign after just four minutes to fire City into an early lead.

But as Burnley ramped up the pressure midway through the first half in search of an equaliser, tempers boiled over, which led to depressing scenes.

As Lewis challenged for the ball at the corner flag, Burnley pair Connor Roberts and Luca Koleosho shoved him to the ground in frustration, drawing a foul and City free-kick.

And as Lewis attempted to get up, a lighter flew toward his head from the home crowd, clearly leaving him in pain.

It left a disappointing taste on the tongue after an entertaining first 45 minutes of the new Premier League season.

Haaland superbly added a second shortly after the incident, handing City ultimate control and sending a statement to those looking to deny them a record-breaking fourth successive title.

Lewis received praise for the first-half performance after Guardiola placed his faith in the 18-year-old right-back to do a job on the other side of the defence.

He boasted a 100 per cent take-on completion rate, maintained an 80 per cent pass accuracy, and won two of his three ground duels.

It will have left Guardiola impressed after opting for Lewis over Aymeric Laporte, new £77m signing Josko Gvardiol and Sergio Gomez.

Ruben Dias and John Stones missed the trip to Turf Moor through injury, but an assured first period reaffirmed Guardiola’s strength in depth.
