Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has torn into Thiago Alcantara and instead he is "one of the most overrated players in Europe".

The German's astonishing attack on the midfielder came after he criticised the Reds ace's ability when out of possession. That is despite the Spain international being a key part of Jurgen Klopp's side this season.

Despite missing out on the Champions League, it has been a successful year for Liverpool who have lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this year. Thiago played a huge role in both victories, while also finishing runners-up in the Premier League.

But Hamann is not a fan of the 31-year-old, telling his old club to revamp their midfield because of the playmaker. "In my opinion, the Reds need to modernize the team a bit, especially in midfield," the ex-Liverpool star said for Sky Sport.

"I don't understand the hype about Thiago. For me he is one of the most overrated players in European football.

"When things are going well and you have a lot of possession he's a good player, but when push comes to shove you don't see him. If you need someone who sets accents, then he doesn't do it.

"[Naby] Keita is also a disappointment, [Jordan] Henderson is a worker. They need a player who can make the difference and give the team that extra something."

This is not the first time that Hamann has had a pop at Thiago and Klopp has already hit back at his countryman. Last month, he said: “People were questioning if he suits our football?

"Thank God these people don’t make decisions. It is more important Thiago wanted to join us and he knew how we played. He is a real football person and thinks a lot about football. He knew how we played, and he knew he would fit in and we knew it as well.”
