Liverpool given two new midfield targets as Verratti and Sanches banished

Premier League season preview: Liverpool

Liverpool might have been given two alternative targets after Paris Saint-Germain reportedly told Marco Verratti and Renato Sanches they were surplus to requirements. Both stars are among a group of players who have been told they have no future with the French champions.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate for further midfield reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut. Fabinho and Jordan Henderson stunned the Anfield hierarchy by leaving for Saudi clubs Al-Ittihad and Al-Ettifaq, respectively.

They joined James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain in departing. Those exits have decimated a midfield department that needed replenishing even before the quintet left.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have joined Liverpool this summer but further signings are needed. Romeo Lavia has been linked, while some reports claim that there is interest in Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

However, two alternative and much cheaper deals have potentially been opened up by PSG. According to RMC, the perennial Ligue 1 winners have told outcast midfielders Verratti and Sanches to find new clubs.

The pair have apparently not been included in the pre-season team photo. Neymar, Hugo Ekitike and Juan Bernat have been left in a similar situation.

Reports in France from earlier this summer claimed that Liverpool were interested in experienced Italian star Verratti. However, moves for Southampton teenager Lavia appear to have been prioritised.

The Saints are demanding around £50m for the former Manchester City youngster, who was one of few players who shone for the relegated club in the Premier League last season. He has not started a competitive fixture under new boss Russell Martin with his future in serious doubt.

Transfer news LIVE as Chelsea make Lavia bid and Man Utd plot £52m double raid[UPDATES]

According to the Telegraph, Liverpool have outbid Chelsea for Brighton ace Caicedo. The Blues have chased the Ecuador international summer but it now seems that Klopp is winning the race to complete a huge move.

It is claimed that Caicedo’s preference is to move to Stamford Bridge. But Chelsea have already spent big money on an array of signings in 2023, including £108m on Enzo Fernandez in January, meaning they might need to sell more players before they can buy.

Liverpool are believed to have earned a combined £50m by selling Fabinho and Henderson. That has allowed them to target a move for an extra midfielder.

Klopp has used new signing Alexis Mac Allister in a deeper midfield role during pre-season. The German said of using the tactic: “Yes, in a compact formation, Alexis can play there, definitely. If he’s there alone, should he play there? No.”
