Liverpool defenders ‘give up’ in ‘utterly embarrassing’ goal against Napoli

Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho Joe Gomez can be seen giving up in their efforts to defend against Napoli as they scored freely on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp was left shellshocked at full-time after watching his side concede four times in 47 minutes in one of the worst performances of his tenure. What was more alarming, though, was the lack of effort from his defenders.

In particular, Alexander-Arnold and Gomez, who basically stood and watched as Napoli raced past them to slot goal after goal. Fabinho was not much better, stepping up with the pace of a snail as Andre Zambo Anguissa strolled through with ease.

The former Fulham flop then had a relatively-easy task of slotting past Alisson, double Napoli's lead to 2-0 and leaving Liverpool in a heap of trouble.

Worse was to come, though, as more schoolboy defending from Alexander-Arnold and Gomez allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is quickly becoming a superstar, to dash past and set up Giovani Simeone for his first Champions League goal, who celebrated in style.

Liverpool fans, are you embarrassed? Comment below

Fans have been left gobsmacked by the shocking levels of defending on show and tore into Liverpool, with one saying: "Alexander Arnold, Gomez, Fabinho. Embarrassing."

Another tweeted: "That was ridiculous, utterly embarrassing."

And a third said: "What on earth were they doing, no one tracked the run. They all stood still."

It wraps up another disappointing night for Liverpool, whose season is yet to truly start after two wins in six in the Premier League – including a defeat to Manchester United. Klopp explained what went wrong in Naples, admitting there was no justification.

He said on BT Sport: “It was really tough to take but I would say not that difficult to explain. Firstly, Napoli played really well and we didn't. That is the first explanation for the defeat. The two penalties we concede, they were both a little unlucky.

“We were not compact defensively or offensively. With Alisson in goal you have to be really bad to concede three goals [in the first half]. You could see it on the pitch. We were not working as a team. That is why we lose games.”
