Liverpool could face ‘Mane replacement’ Danjuma in Champions League semi-finals

Liverpool could now face the man they have reportedly earmarked as a replacement for Sadio Mane in the Champions League semi-finals after Villarreal's shock win over Bayern Munich.

The Reds carry a 3-1 advantage on aggregate into the second leg of their quarter-final clash with Benfica. Goals from Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz handed Jurgen Klopp's men a commanding lead for the return fixture at Anfield.

If they are able to progress, as many expect, they will face Villarreal in the semi-final, with a place in the final in Paris at stake. The La Liga side claimed a stunning upset win over Bayern Munich in their quarter-final on Tuesday, having knocked out Juventus in the last 16.

The Yellow Submarines broke Bayern hearts with just two minutes remaining to book their place in the semi-finals. Gerard Moreno crossed into Samuel Chukwueze, who finished at the back post just three minutes after coming on as a substitute.

That goal proved to be decisive, handing Unai Emery's men a 2-1 win on aggregate. Robert Lewandowski had earlier pulled Bayern back into the tie when he swivelled and found the bottom corner with a low strike that went in off the post, seven minutes after the break.

The Bundesliga champions had registered an astonishing 45 shots across the two legs, but a heroic defensive effort helped Villarreal to go through. And it means that Liverpool will get a chance to see the player they believe could replace Mane up close.

According to Goal, the Reds are eyeing Arnaut Danjuma, although a move is 'unlikely' this summer. Danjuma only arrived at the Estadio de las Ceramicas last summer, but he has hugely impressed, scoring 14 goals and registering four assists.

One of those strikes was Villarreal's winner in their first leg against Bayern, when Danjuma stabbed in from close range. That goal proved to be decisive in the tie and will give the Reds a chance to size him up in person after he caught their attention.

It is stated that Danjuma is viewed as a 'possible successor' to Mane, who is out of contract next summer. If the Senegal international departs Anfield, Liverpool could move to bring in Danjuma to replace him.

Villarreal's astonishing win over German giants Bayern will then give Liverpool extra incentive to secure their own progression. And Emery's squad, after their stunning victory, will undoubtedly be watching the game at Anfield with keen interest.
