Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists "theres no need" to sign a midfielder

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reassured supporters that "there's no need" for the club to recruit a midfielder in the transfer market, despite concerns about squad depth.

The German gaffer, 55, had previously confirmed the Reds were not expecting any further movement after conducting their business in the early weeks of the window. Following Sadio Mane's decision to exit the club, the Merseysiders moved quickly to bring in Uruguayan ace Darwin Nunez, forking out a club-record £85million to seal his signature.

After shrewdly recruiting Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey, Klopp has now reaffirmed that their dealings in the transfer market are effectively over.

"How I said if nobody wants to leave – and no player came to me with that request yet and I don’t expect it really, to be honest – there is no need for a new midfielder," Klopp told reporters ahead of their pre-season clash against Crystal Palace.

"We cannot just add on midfielders. We respect the contracts with our boys as well, that means as long as we signed them, they get all our support – in training, between the sessions, during the games and between the games.

"That is the situation we have; really, you can count our midfielders. And, for me, Harvey Elliott is a new signing as well, after last season how he started. He is very young, came back brilliant, then had a little low, that is completely normal after being that long out. So, really excited about seeing him."

It wasn't just Elliott who missed key matches for the Red last season – Thiago, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Curtis Jones all endured a spell on the sidelines during the course of the 2021/22 campaign. Despite the raft of injuries, Klopp's side almost pulled off the spectacular – an unprecedented quadruple, but there have been calls to strengthen the middle of the park from the terraces.

Both Inter Milan's Nicolo Barella and Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham have been touted with a move to Anfield but the pair have signed contract extensions at their respective clubs within the past 12 months. While not ruling out a move for either in the future, it's understood Klopp will wait until at least next summer before addressing the need for another midfielder.
