New data suggests Liverpool could face European demotion after their Champions League hammering at Napoli on Wednesday night – as they are now fourth favourites to win the Europa League.

Jurgen Klopp’s men got their Champions League group-stage campaign off to a nightmare start in Naples, where they fell three goals behind inside a disastrous opening 45 minutes.

The hosts then compounded their misery by making it 4-0 shortly after the break, meaning a subsequent strike from Luis Diaz proved nothing but a consolation in the end.

It was a calamitous night all round for Liverpool, and new data compiled by entertainment and technology company Gracenote indicates they may not make it out of the group stages.

Following the first round of Champions League fixtures, Gracenote has calculated which teams have the biggest chance of winning this season’s Europa League – and Liverpool are joint-fourth on the list.

The Reds, who would drop into Europe’s second-tier competition if they finished third in their Champions League group and narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stages, are said to stand a six per cent chance of lifting the trophy in Budapest next May.

Data now suggests they are amongst the favourites to win the Europa League this season

But it is Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side who are being backed by the stats to lift the trophy

FAVS: Arsenal – 12%

Manchester United –  9%

Inter Milan – 6%

Liverpool – 6%

Real Betis – 5%

Barcelona – 5%

Roma – 4%

Real Sociedad – 4%

Chelsea – 3%

Juventus – 3%

Ajax – 3%

Sevilla – 3%

They are deemed more likely to do so than Real Betis (five per cent), Roma (four per cent) and Real Sociedad (four per cent) – who are all currently in the competition.

The stats claim Arsenal are best positioned to go all the way and win it, with Mikel Arteta’s men given a 12 per cent chance of success, while their Premier League rivals Manchester United are second on nine per cent.

Another Champions League team, Inter Milan, sit level with Liverpool as fourth favourites following their 2-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

That opening result leaves Simone Inzaghi’s men with a potential mountain to climb in a group which also contains Spanish giants Barcelona, who beat Viktoria Plzen 5-1 in their first outing.

Nevertheless, not even this has spared Barca exclusion from the list of Europa League frontrunners, as Xavi’s men are the joint-fifth most likely side to win it on five per cent.

Chelsea, Juventus, Ajax and Sevilla – all given a three per cent chance of success in the competition – also feature in the top 15.

The Europa League group stages get underway on Thursday night, with Arsenal going away to FC Zurich and Man United hosting Real Sociedad.
