England’s stunning Euro 2022 triumph was watched by three times as many people as the Premier League’s all-time record game.
The historic 2-1 extra time win over Germany at Wembley became the most watched programme of 2022 so far after 17.4million people tuned in to the BBC to see England land their first major trophy.
Sarina Wiegman's stars conquered Europe in front of more than 87,000 fans at Wembley as it also became the most-watched women’s game on UK television of all time. And in doing so, it blew the Premier League’s biggest ever game out of the water.

It may come as a shock that the Premier League’s most watched game was a 0-0 Merseyside derby snooze-fest at Goodison Park. Everton and Liverpool’s pandemic-era clash in June 2020 provided just one clear-cut chance in the form of Tom Davies striking the post, yet still recorded 5.5 million viewers in a monumental anti-climax.
That still comfortably trumped last season’s record of 3.65 million as Liverpool trounced Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford, but was obliterated by the Euros win on Sunday.
Only the Euro 2020 final defeat last summer surpassed the Lioness’ victory in recent viewership. The match against Italy became the most-watched event in UK broadcast history with a staggering 31 million.
Yet the women’s game has made huge strides and even drew in a bigger attendance at the final than the men’s event. Still, all of those records and statistics will pale in comparison to the euphoria of securing England’s biggest victory since winning the World Cup on the same ground back in 1966.
And it is set to be capped off by the squad celebrating their iconic achievement in front of 7,000 fans in Trafalgar Square today (Monday).

Meanwhile, BBC Director General Tim Davie commented: "We are incredibly proud to have championed women's football and are thrilled we were able to bring such a special sporting moment to the public.
"This was the most-watched women's football game on UK television of all-time and the most-watched programme in 2022 so far – and deservedly so. Everyone at the BBC is delighted at the win and being able to share that with the public."
