Lionel Messi became arguably the world’s best footballer at Barcelona by winning six Ballon d’Or awards alongside four Champions Leagues. However, his form in Spain hasn’t been carried on at his new club Paris Saint-Germain – and Nicolas Anelka has unleashed an extraordinary tirade at the Argentine superstar.

Messi, 34, joined PSG on a free transfer after it transpired that Barcelona could not afford his wages given their new salary cap.

The Argentinian scored 672 goals in just 778 games for the Blaugrana as he stamped his authority as one of the world’s greatest ever players.

His release after Barcelona’s financial issues had clubs all over Europe scrambling for his signature, with the diminutive playmaker opting for the French capital.

But he is yet to impress at the Parc des Princes and Messi has come under criticism from fans and pundits – with Nicolas Anelka savaging the PSG star in a recent interview.

“Today we demand from Neymar, but we can do the same with Messi,” Anelka said to RMC.

“Since the beginning of the season it is not extraordinary either.

“There is a player who has six Ballon d’Ors and in the end he is not so extraordinary.”

Anelka backed Neymar for taking the brunt of the criticism at the moment, with PSG yet to set the world alight this season despite establishing a strong lead at the top of Ligue 1.

Messi scored just a four out of 10 rating in the 0-0 draw against Marseille on Sunday, with Neymar scoring a grade less.

The Argentine has scored just three goals in seven games so far for PSG and is yet to make his mark in Ligue 1. Neymar has too made a slower than usual start to the season, but Anelka has backed the Brazilian to come good.

He added: “A difficult time is going on.

“If the coach thinks he has to play to regain his level, he does play. Leaving him aside or replacing him to break his morale will not fix things.

“You never know what can happen to him on the pitch. Pochettino trusts him and even without Neymar being well, the team continues to win.”

PSG take on reigning champions Lille on Friday in a bid to pull 10 points clear of second-placed Lens.
