Klopp fails to persuade Liverpool target despite making personal phone call

Liverpool look set to miss out on Aurelien Tchouameni despite reports that Jurgen Klopp made a personal phone call to the Frenchman.

The Reds were thought to be leading the race for the Monaco midfielder ahead of the summer, but now Real Madrid have agreed to sign the Frenchman for £85million. Liverpool have been targeting a midfielder for some time, but they will have to look elsewhere as Tchouameni closes in on a move to Los Blancos.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the player only wanted to sign for Madrid despite proposals from Liverpool and Paris Saint Germain. And Liverpool's approach even involved a phone call between Klopp and the midfielder.

Klopp reportedly called the Frenchman as he began to weigh up his options, but after consideration, it was only ever Madrid that appealed to Tchouameni. This was despite PSG offering the highest amount of money to sign him.

But ironically it was in Paris that Tchouameni agreed to join Madrid, before they played Liverpool in the Champions League final. After considering both finalists, he was probably happy with his decision as Madrid edged the clash 1-0.

Tchouameni looks set to join French teammates Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and Karim Benzema, although he won't be playing domestic football with Kylian Mbappe just yet. Mbappe's U-turn frustrated Madrid bosses, but they've now reinvested some money in Tchouameni as they wait patiently.

Liverpool will have to look elsewhere, and it's their second blow within the space of a week. Klopp was thought to be keen on signing Barcelona star Gavi, and the Spaniard has a £42m release clause in his current contract.

But despite their ongoing issues, Gavi is set to sign a new deal, and Liverpool have reportedly 'given up', according to Sport.es. And Jude Bellingham was another target, but the England star has confirmed he will remain at Borussia Dortmund next season.

With Sadio Mane looking to leave Liverpool this summer, it hasn't been the best start to the transfer window for Klopp. Although they have finally secured the signing of Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, after failing in January.
