Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes that Darwin Nunez has shown enough potential to date to justify him developing into a ‘fantastic’ player at Anfield. The Uruguayan international has scored three in seven league appearances so far this season.
Nunez has received mixed reviews since arriving in the Premier League from Benfica in a deal worth £85million. The forward has shown on several occasions that he can be a clinical finisher and an apt replacement for Sadio Mane, though elements of his overall game have led some to question his potential.
However, Johnson firmly believes that Nunez will be one of the first names on the team sheet for Klopp if he continues to adapt to life in England and improve. The former England international told Midnite: “Nunez was brilliant against West Ham, he looked the same as he was a Benfica. Nunez is quick, aggressive and has great technique.
“If he can get a run of games, keep scoring and continue growing his confidence, then yeah he can be fantastic.” Nunez has proved a versatile option to date for Klopp, being able to play on the wing and as a striker – though his physical presence has seen him to best effect so far as a No 9.

Liverpool have struggled so far this season, already looking to have sacrificed their chances of mounting a serious title challenge – barring major collapses at Manchester City and Arsenal. Klopp’s side have lacked the spark that petrified teams last season, with their injury problems also a factor.
Nunez is amongst those to have spent time on the sidelines, being ruled out of his side’s match against Nottingham Forest last weekend due to an ankle injury, in which they were beaten 1-0, in a display where his presence in the final third was certainly missed.
Former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell feels the injury came at the wrong time for the striker, telling Footy Insider: “This is the life of a Premier League player. It is a rollercoaster. It is so tough and so uncompromising. Nunez played really well against West Ham. He scored the winner and looked a handful. He looks really sharp right now.
“A hamstring niggle robs him of another start against Forest. It is harsh but this is football. Liverpool should have enough to cope without him but with other injuries, they need him. They are relying on him to help out right now.”
