Here we go again. Four years after Paul Pogba was apparently offered to Manchester City during his time at Manchester United, talk of a potential move to the Etihad Stadium has arisen again. And Jose Mourinho was typically blunt when quizzed on the prospect in 2018.

Four years ago, it emerged that Pogba had been offered to Manchester City by his late agent, Mino Raiola.

Pep Guardiola spoke out in his press conference and, after being criticised by Raiola, said: “I don’t understand why I am such a bad guy.

But being this guy, two months ago he offered me Mkhitaryan and Pogba to play with us. Why?

“Why did he offer them? He was interested in Mkhitaryan and Pogba playing with us.

“Pogba is an incredible player. A top, top player.

“I said no. We don’t have the money enough to buy Pogba because he is so expensive.”

At the time, Pogba was struggling for form under Mourinho.

He’d fallen out with his manager during a defeat to Tottenham at Wembley, with the pair having an argument on the sidelines during that defeat.

Pogba then found himself being marginalised by Mourinho, who appeared to prefer the youthful energy of Scott McTominay.

And that meant Mourinho was blunt when quizzed about the prospect of the France international crossing the divide.

“Guardiola says that, the agent denies that. One of them is saying the truth and one of them isn’t,” he said in response to the claims.

“I am not interested in which is the liar and which is the honest guy.”

Mourinho also said he didn’t even think about the prospect, saying he didn’t talk to Pogba about Guardiola’s claims.

“No, I don’t even think about it,” he added.

“We know Guardiola and Mino, the relationship is not the best, so it’s normal that sometimes they can come with a little touch on each other.

“But I wasn’t worried about it, I wasn’t upset by it, I didn’t speak with Paul about it and I didn’t call Mino to ask him anything at all.

“I was just focused on the game and I think Paul was the same, because the way he played is only possible when he’s focused on the game.”

Raiola, for his part, denied offering his client to United’s fiercest rivals.

And when this was put to Guardiola he said: “Okay. I trust in my people.”

Now, it’s possible Pogba will do the unthinkable by leaving United for City on a free transfer.

It will be a controversial move, one that would evoke memories of when Carlos Tevez crossed the divide in 2009.

Tevez’s two-year stint with United came to an end that year and Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t want to keep him for the big money being demanded.

So the Argentina international then rocked the Red Devils by joining City instead.

Tevez would go on to make United regret their actions, propelling City to the Premier League title in 2012.

And whether Pogba now does the same remains to be seen.

Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG have also been linked with the midfielder, who won the World Cup in 2018.

But clubs in England have greater financial muscle, which paves the way for a shock move across the Premier League.
