Jamie Carragher makes title and top-four prediction and reveals Man Utd 'worry'

Jamie Carragher has made his Premier League top-four prediction and admits as a Liverpool legend he is ‘worried’ about the progress of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Arsenal news, exclusives and analysis

Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United currently occupy the Champions League places, although Tottenham, Brighton and Brentford are not far behind.

The Premier League title race looks set to be contested between surprise leaders Arsenal – bidding to win their first title since 2004 – and defending champions Man City, aiming for a fifth title since 2018.

Manchester United have dropped points against Leeds United, Arsenal and Crystal Palace in recent weeks and Carragher does not view the Red Devils as title challengers.

However, the former England defender has been impressed by United’s progress under Ten Hag and says from a selfish point of view it is ‘worrying’ to see the red half of Manchester making strides.

United have largely struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2012, with their last trophy coming in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

‘It does feel different to me under Erik ten Hag,’ Carragher said on Sky Bet’s The Overlap.

Jamie Carragher’s Premier League predictions

Premier League champions: Arsenal
Top-four: Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle
Bottom-three: Southampton, Bournemouth, Leeds
Golden Boot: Erling Haaland
Manager of the season: Mikel Arteta
Most surprising player: Lisandro Martinez

‘I always felt there was a negativity around the previous managers. With Jose Mourinho it felt like there were problems between him and the board.

‘With Louis van Gaal, I’m not sure the fans were ever on board with his style of football. And with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], no one ever thought he would be a manager who could win United a title.

‘But now it feels like they’ve got a manager who knows what he’s doing. Also, it feels like there’s a spirit at United that we haven’t seen for a while.

‘It feels like that’s coming back. I think there’s something happening at Manchester United that I didn’t see with those other managers. So it’s worry, yeah!’

Carragher expects Arsenal to win the Premier League under ‘manager of the season’ Mikel Arteta and has predicted Southampton, Bournemouth and Leeds United will be relegated to the Championship.

Explaining why he believes Arsenal will be crowned champions, Carragher added: ‘I’ve tipped them for the title because I’m not sure Man City can get back to their best.

‘The longer Man City are like this, the more breathing space Arsenal have got. That buffer Arsenal have right now is quite sizable. I think they will hold on.

‘You don’t look at City and think they’re going to win every game. It doesn’t feel like they’re quite there right now. Arsenal are in a really good position.’

Arsenal suffered just their second league defeat of the season last weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Sean Dyche’s Everton.

The Gunners will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday against in-form Brentford. Title rivals Man City lost to Tottenham on Sunday and return to action against Aston Villa.
