Inside chaos of Englands 2006 World Cup WAGs

It was on this day in 2006 that Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro proudly lifted the World Cup aloft.

Sixteen years ago, the Azzurri edged out France in a penalty shootout to earn their fourth and most recent global title. It is a final made memorable by Zinedine Zidane's moment of madness, with the former Ballon d'Or winner seeing red for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in extra-time.

It was another World Cup to end in disappointment for England, with the Three Lions knocked out on penalties once again to Portugal for the second successive tournament. Wayne Rooney's straight red and Cristiano Ronaldo's wink preceded more shootout heartache for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side in Germany.

However, it was arguably the antics of England's wives and girlfriends who made more headlines during the World Cup than the team. It was a sideshow which Fabio Capello controversially decided to ban altogether four years later in South Africa.

The usually quiet spa town of Baden-Baden was thrust into the spotlight overnight by the actions of the WAG brigade. Drunk dancing on tables, sky-high hotel bills and even a drug scandal were among the stories to come out of the German resort during the tournament.

David Beckham's pop-star wife Victoria was dubbed the 'Queen of the WAGs', and was regularly pictured alongside fellow singer Cheryl. The Girls Aloud star was Ashley Cole's fiancee at the time, and the couple tied the knot the following month.

Wayne Rooney's future wife Coleen was just 20-years-old at the time of the 2006 World Cup, with the couple marrying two years later. Reports suggest she was part of a group of that racked up a £57,000 bill during just one hour of shopping.

Abbey Clancy had just begun her relationship with striker Peter Crouch, but was sent home in disgrace after pictures emerged of the Scouse model snorting cocaine two years' prior. The pair initially separated, but got back together and have now celebrated more than a decade of marriage.

Clancy was not the only model among England's WAGS, with former nail technician Alex Curran said to have splashed £25,000 in a hotel bill with 60 bottles of champagne on her tab. Curran married Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard a year later, and the couple now have four children.

Frank Lampard's former girlfriend Elen Rivas reportedly delivered a rendition of 'I Will Survive' stood on a table in a Baden-Baden bar. The Spanish model was also said to have lost her temper while trying to take six items of carry-on luggage on board during the flight out to Germany.

Vanessa Perroncel and Melanie Slade were among the WAGS to avoid the headlines for any drunken incidents. French model Perroncel was pregnant during the tournament with her and Wayne Bridge's son, while Theo Walcott's girlfriend Slade was just 16-years-old at the time and was still sitting her GCSE exams.
