Incredible ghost pass goalkeeping blunder has fans in stitches five years on

Football fans have been left in stitches after footage resurfaced of an incredible blunder where a Bundesliga shot-stopper mistook the penalty spot for the match ball.

Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner went viral on social media for his hilarious air-kick against Borussia Monchengladbach in November 2017, slamming his right foot high into the sky when trying to hoof the penalty spot past the halfway line.

With the ball rolling back in his direction, the former Germany under-17 international took a touch inside his own area before looking for a team-mate to lay the ball off to. However, Zentner doesn't control the ball quite how he intended, as it keeps on rolling past his right foot.

Unaware that the ball is no longer placed in front of him, the Mainz keeper tries to offload it to a nearby defender when under pressure – but kicks nothing but air at the first attempt.

Monchengladbach captain Lars Stindl was quick to cotton to the loose ball rolling backwards, successfully tackling a scrambling Zentner inside his own six-yard box before the ball was powered into the stands by a recovering Mainz defender.

While Monchengladbach failed to capitalise on Zentner's lack of awareness, the famed gaffe was expertly ridiculed on social media. The clip is now on its fifth anniversary and fans have once again marvelled at the sensational blunder.

"Once was the no-look pass. Then Robin Zentner invented the no-ball pass," joked one cruel supporter. "Till this day I still can’t believe this is a real video," harked a second.

"Nah this is actually one of the dumbest things I’ve seen on a pitch," quipped a third. "Never forget. We don’t," hailed British eye specialists Specsavers.

Whilst a fifth remarkably revealed: "I was actually at this game and bent over to grab my pint and completely missed it."
