Jimmy Greaves’ family has spoken out after Harry Kane broke his Tottenham goalscoring record, insisting the icon would have been ‘absolutely delighted’ to see Kane’s feat.
Spurs striker Kane scored his 267th goal for the club in a 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday, taking him one past Greaves’ previous record of 266.
And Greaves’ family responded generously to the milestone, congratulating the England captain for his goalscoring brilliance.
Danny Greaves, the late great’s son, spoke in a video message on the big screen at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium after full-time in north London.
He said: ‘If anyone was to beat it, he’d be absolutely delighted it was you,’ speaking about his father, who passed away in 2021.

Kane then took the microphone in the centre circle, before thanking his family, supporters, team-mates and coaches, continuing: ‘We’ve still got a lot to play for this year. Let’s keep the support going and see where it takes us.’
The family added in a statement: ‘Congratulations to Harry Kane. We are proud that Jimmy’s record has stood for over 50 years and we know he would have been happy for Harry to be the one to beat it after all this time.
‘Congratulations again to Harry from the Greaves family. Irene, Lynn, Andy, Mitzi and Danny.’
Spurs manager Antonio Conte, who could not attend the game because he is in Italy recovering after gallbladder surgery, called Kane to personally congratulate him.
Conte was quick to add his congratulations from afar, with a video from the dressing room seeing Kane receive a call from his boss.
‘You make me proud,’ Conte was heard saying, with the Spurs head coach confirming he was feeling fine after being asked by Kane about his recovery from surgery on Wednesday.
Conte later posted on Instagram to congratulate his side on their victory, with the result putting Spurs on point behind fourth placed Newcastle in the Premier League.
‘Always with You, even from afar,’ Conte wrote. ‘Proud of the whole team.’
Greaves, who passed away in 2021, was the club’s previous all-time top scorer, with 266 goals

The post-match focus was centred on Kane’s achievement, with the forward becoming just the third player to reach 200 Premier League goals. Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney are the only other players to have reached the landmark.
And pundit Jamie Carragher hailed his magnificent record after the game, saying: ‘I’ve said this before. We’ve waxed lyrical about Kane over the last ten years. Maybe it’s tribalism or the fact he hasn’t won a trophy, it feels people are reluctant to put him alongside maybe an Alan Shearer.
‘If you say to someone who’s better, Shearer or Kane, or (Gary) Lineker or (Wayne) Rooney, Kane never gets put above any of them, I don’t know why… You wouldn’t class Rooney, I know he’s got lots of goals, as an out and out goalscorer like Shearer or Lineker. It feels to me that Kane is the only one who could really do both.
‘As an out and out goalscorer and the longer his career’s gone on, he’s gone into that deeper role. The passes he plays, he’s the best passer in the England team, he’s one of the best passers alongside Kevin De Bruyne probably in the Premier League now.
‘I don’t think I’ve seen that from someone who has got so many goals in the past. People question the trophy side of it but Shearer only won one trophy. I think Lineker only won one trophy in English football.’
