‘Greatest triple save ever seen’ miraculously denies Jose Mourinho’s Roma

Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario miraculously denied Jose Mourinho's Roma with the "greatest triple save ever" in Serie A.

The Italian keeper produced three saves in quick succession to keep his side in the match at the Stadio Olimpico during a mad goal-mouth scramble. Empoli had failed to clear a corner completely, with Vicario forced to parry away a volley from inside area, only for the ball to drop to another Roma player inside the box.

He then got down to his right to keep out the follow-up, before Tammy Abraham pounced to head the loose ball towards goal.

However, the Roma striker was prevented by the outstretched leg of Vicario, who blocked the header whilst being laid on his back.

Fans were left stunned by his triple save and flocked to social media to react, with one tweeting: "That is superb!"

Another wrote: "Up there with one of the best saves I’ve seen. Ridiculous." A third also commented: "This might be top three goalkeeping passages I’ve ever seen."

Vicario is in his first season at Empoli, having joined the club from Cagliari last summer. The 26-year-old has since kept seven clean sheets in 21 league appearances, conceding just 26 goals in those matches.

He has also been included in both of Roberto Mancini's last two Italy squads, but is yet to pick up his first senior international cap.

Despite Vicario's heroics, Empoli fell to a 2-0 defeat after early goals from Roger Ibanez and Abraham, with the win leaving Roma third in Serie A.

Mourinho has been in charge in the Italian capital since the summer of 2021 and paired a sixth place finish with victory in the final of the Europa Conference League.

His tenure has not been without drama, though, with Mourinho up to his old tricks in Italy. The former Chelsea boss stormed down the tunnel minutes before the half-time whistle in midweek as Roma lost to Cremonese in the Coppa Italia.
