Goalkeeper hospitalised after firecracker strikes him in ugly scenes in Italy

There were ugly scenes in Serie B on Saturday afternoon when Vicenza keeper Nikita Contini was hit with a firecracker.

Lecce, who are chasing Serie A football next season, could have moved clear at the top of the table when they faced relegation threaten Vicenza. And it started well for Lecce when they hit the front in the 69th minute.

However, Lecce fans threw flares and firecrackers onto the pitch in celebration, with one hitting Contini and another striking a 12-year-old ball boy. Contini was immediately given medical attention, and after a ten-minute delay, he was stretchered off with a neck brace.

Contini was taken to the San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza, where he had a CT scan. The scans revealed nothing wrong with his head, but the Ukrainian-Italian shot-stopper was kept in overnight as a precautionary measure.

However, he is expected to be discharged on Sunday with instructions to rest at home.

The 10 minutes of added time at the end of the game would eventually come back to haunt Lecce.

In the 94th minute, Vicenza were awarded a penalty, that was initially missed but had to be retaken after the Lecce keeper was deemed to move off his line. Vicenza then stole a winner in the 103rd minute to keep hopes of remaining in Serie B alive.

After the match, Lecce's president fumed: Find the person responsible for throwing the bang. It is not fair that you pay an entire supporter who is known everywhere for the exemplary nature of their behaviour."
